Similarly, Mimi Surada's line of lip gloss doesn't come at you with a leafy logo or go-green mantra. In fact, the package of six wildly flavoured glosses comes in such a sexy container it's been mistaken for lingerie!
But nightclothes might not be received as well in the diplomatic circles where Surada sells the bulk of her product.
Born in Bangkok to a Chinese family, Surada has a master's degree in interna- tional business from the University of North London. While in England, she met her partner, Apichai Tuanyok, whose expertise in disease control motivated her to look more closely at product labels. With two young children to consider, the move to organic made even more sense.
In August 2008, she combined her style smarts with international social savvy, launching a line of natural lip glosses.
In her first four months, she sold more than 1,000 units of gKissr gloss and pressented her product at the Genie Awards. The 2009 Ottawa Humane Society's Fur Ball featured its cruelty-free status and included samples in guest gift bags.
Surada is open about her gloss not being 100 per cent organic because she couldn't find organic beeswax or vitamin E made in Canada - but she's on the hunt and hopes to reach full organic status in her next product shipment.
The dainty woman says the products have become popular as gifts from am- bassadors to family at home, as well as welcome gifts for visitors to Canada. Despite her swift success, Surada insists this is a hobby. "I wanted to do something organic and made in Canada," she says. "I love this country and I want to give back to Canada."
